Albert J. Thiel was born in Antwerp, Belgium and is married to Sarah with 2 children. He resides in Atlanta Georgia and has been in the United States since 1979. Albert has been involved in the aquarium hobby for longer than he cares to remember, since he started at age 11 and gradually got into more and more aspects of the hobby. He has kept freshwater community and specialty tanks, plant aquariums and has extensive knowledge of coral reef aquariums which he started keeping about 20 years ago when he was still living in Europe and when most hobbyists were not really doing so yet. Albert has written 6 books and many articles for magazines both in the USA and in foreign countries such as the UK, France, Italy, Spain and in the Far East. Albert maintains a large free web site at http://www.athiel.com and gladly shares his knowledge with anyone interested. Albert holds various degrees from St Ignatius University not related to the hobby. He has also translated books from foreign languages into English and other ones. Albert is presently working on a 7th extensive book on modern techniques for keeping reef aquariums, that includes over 600 pages on the animals kept in such tanks alone.
