Luis Mercado, born October 9, 1964 in San Juan Puerto Rico and came to live in New York city when he was three years old.
Always fascinated by the sea since his early childhood days playing in the waves at Orchard beach in the bronx his fascination grew and eventually led him in the direction of maintaining aquariums at the age of 12.
Not getting enough of a challenge from freshwater aquariums even with demanding fish such as Discus and African ciclids, he decided to try saltwater at the age of 14. He has never looked back from this undertaking.
Through High school at Bronx, H.S. Of Science through his college years and into adulthood, his interest in marine reef aquariums has never waned but gotten stronger and stronger.
Presently involved with the development of new techniques to help beginning aquarists get involved in the hobby along with his Planetreef web site has given him a new outlet for ideas and for the sharing of information between hobbyists which to him is the key to furthering interest and success.
His vision and premise for the Planetreef web site is that although we live on earth, the better name for this planet is Planetreef or water planet as earth is compose of 90% water.
