THE BEAK
15 K
Note the layers of growth on this bird's beak
Your bird's beak is like a fingernail-it grows continually, in layers. It will wear off at the front edges, and pieces will flake off occasionally. This is normal and nothing to be alarmed about. The bird needs something hard to chew on to wear the beak down, or eventually it will become too overgrown to eat properly. Urge your bird to chew cuttlebone, or teach the bird that a mineral rock from the pet store is a toy. If the bird won't chew on anything hard, you may occasionally need to take it to the vet to get its beak filed down. Never do this yourself-if done wrong, the bird may not be able to eat, and it is possible to injure the beak, which could fall off!
